Despite the recession it appears suburban sprawl is keeping its stronghold on Connecticut. A new Target store opened its doors today at 195 River Road (Route 12) in the southeastern part of the state. The store sits across the street from a Wal Mart, Home Depot, Kohl's, Old Navy and down the road from a Better Val-U Supermarket.
While I favor Target over Wal Mart for a variety of reasons its sad to see more land torn up for suburban (or rural) big box stores. The Lisbon Target is part of a new store model for the company. The Lisbon store is one of 42 nationwide that is equipped with a new layout that provides 35 aisles of groceries. The store employs 196 people which includes 6 managers.
According to the Norwich Bulletin the new Target has its work cut out as it looks like the competition in eastern Connecticut for consumers has heat up for all retailers (both big and small). There are Wal Mart Supercenters in Waterford and Windham and they are working on another one for Brooklyn. Montville and Dayville have fairly new Stop & Shops. Tri Town Foods is expected to come to Montville. The Norwich Wal Mart was recently renovated. And a new Target opened at Killingy Commons back in October.
